Nobody believed they had found one, which was just as well because George (as they called him) was very shy. He was a loyal friend, doing his best to help the twins make money to finance their mother's dry little ranch on Cricket Creek. George ate sagebrush, looked for fossils, and fought an plane (which he thought was a pterodactyl) with faithful enthusiasm, but his walnut-sized brain often made him more hindrance than help. Especially when he went after the bank robber! This story is told so convincingly that you'll be looking for dinosaurs around every mesa. And who knows? Maybe you'll find one!

I read this book when I was 10 years old. It was the first book that I read on my own that made me truly care about the characters. I was reluctant to to turn the last page. I did not want to say goodbye to Joan to Joey Brown and George the Stegosaurus. It was as if Evelyn Lampman had willed to life real people that became my friends. As the end of this book is, shall we say, bittersweet, the joy of my remembrance of reading it always has just a touch of sadness to it. This book was instrumental in making me a lifelong avid reader.

The Shy Stegosaurus of Cricket Creek
Excellent read for young adolescents about two kids who meet a stegosaurus on their ranch, encounter bandits and learn a few lessons about life. I loved this book as a young teenager and was delighted to find it again. I enjoyed reading it again as a grandmama!
