Although now known as an international oil company, the Samuel family who founded the business were originally involved in the importation and transportation od sea shells from the South Seas to Britain. In those days, shells were a popular form of decioration and were a collectable item. from these humble beginnings rose the world famour Shell oil company; hence this book. The book consists of a series of eight articles each about an aspect of the scallop shell. Thew whole book is sumptuously illustrated in colourand the red cloth borads are embossed with gilt shell decorations.
