Long out of print, this is a riveting firsthand account of Leonard Clark's search for the legendary lost Seven Cities of Cibola — reputedly home to enormous reserves of gold — in the rain forest east of the Peruvian Andes. A former U. S. Army intelligence officer, Clark is joined on his expedition by Inez Pokorny, a gutsy, multilingual female explorer. Their treacherous journey includes encounters with head-hunting Jivaro Indians, man-eating jaguars, 40-foot-long anacondas, poisonous plants, and shamanistic healers. Against the odds, Clark and Pokorny reach their destination, but nearly starve to death trying to transport sacks of gold out of the dense tropical foliage. E-305; 9.0 X 6.5 X 1.0 inches.

The story of 1950's exploration of the Amazon River by Leonard Clark. A little slow in the beginning but becomes really exciting as the he and his companions are captured by cannibals. It makes you get out a modern day map of Peru and Ecuador to follow his route.

50+ years later
Even as a child I was fascinated with jungle books. I remember reading this in about 1956 as a young boy. As I re-read it now I have no idea how I got through it the first time with the complexity of the writing; I even questioned that I, in fact, had done so. But the pictures and the story had a vague familiarity that told me I had.
It's an amazing read. If you grew up with adventure books like Kon Tiki or even Burrough's books, you will probably like this.
