This book, a personal research project, by the much maligned Robert Welch, is part of a large body of knowledge and work that had been blocked from serious American history because of the expulsion of the Birches by too many with Conservative leanings.
If you want to see the kind of trenchant work a good, albeit very tough, reporter would cover, read this book.
I cannot deny, nor would I, that Mr. Welch is a man of strong opinions - indeed very strong opinions. And, no doubt, his strong opinions flow directly from his strong values. But I believe his judgment far more sound than would someone who has allowed themselves to become prejudiced against him because he, Mr Welch, is not the type of American a reader is use to.
His argument is disturbing and well documented, no matter it is not the last word.
