Seller's Description:
"The Poetry and Prose of Heinrich Heine" by Heinrich Heine, with introduction, editing, and translation by Frederic Ewen. This is a hardcover First Citadel Edition (1948) in black cloth, contrasted by gold print on the front cover and spine. The book is in fair condition without a jacket. The print along the spine is fading. The covers show some wear to the corners with slight splits at the spine ends and light spot stains. There are some light stains on the edges of the text block. The binding has a little give to it and the hinges have been repaired. The interior pages are clean and unmarked. Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was a poet whose verse inspired music by Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. He was equally admired in his lifetime for his elegant prose. This collection includes famous work inspired by Heine's journeys as a young man and explores the development of spirituality in "On the History of Religion and Philosophy in Germany." It spans the earliest religious beliefs of the Germanic people, the philosophy of Hegel, the dangers of yielding to 'primeval Germanic paganism', and, in "Memoirs, " Heine considers his Jewish heritage and describes his early childhood. These prose works are translated by Frederic Ewen. Translators into English of Heine's poetry include Louis Untermeyer and Emma Lazarus. Together, the poetry and prose offer fascinating insight into a brilliant and prophetic mind. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment for protection from the elements. A USPS electronic tracking number will be issued free of charge. Feel free to contact us for more information or pictures regarding the book. 874 pages.
