G. Knetler; T. H. Shepard. Good. A collection of Robert Dryden's poems and translations, in a signed armorial binding. This work is a collection of poetry by John Dryden, with 'The Life of Dryden' by Dr Johnson to the front. Some of the poems included are 'Upon the Death of Lord Hastings', 'Religio Laici', 'Of the Young Statesman', as well a selection of his translations from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', Boccace, Ovid's ''Art of Love', Theocritus, Homer, and more. Dryden was made the first Poet Laureate in 1668, and was one of the most popular poets of the seventeenth century. He dominated literary life in Restoration England, and established the use of heroic couplet as a standard form of English poetry. In a signed armorial binding by Wiseman, who was based in Cambridge. The armorial binding could possibly be from St John's College in Cambridge, which is were William Wordsworth, Douglas Adams, and Cecil Beaton attended. With a frontispiece and an illustrated title page. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper 'C. W. Robert, Downing Road, Cambridge'. Rebound in a full morocco binding, with gilt decoration to the boards and to the spine. Externally, some rubbing to the joints, to the head and tail of the spine, and to the raised bands. Minor marking to the boards. A little bumping to the extremities. Hinges are strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper 'C. W. Robert, Downing Road, Cambridge'. Binders stamp to the tail of the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with spotting to the endpapers only. Good.
