The Physician is one of twenty-six volumes in the Life Science Library. Originally published in the 1960s, this series is an introduction to the many fields of science. This volume traces the development of the modern physician. The opening chapter is an overview of the early years of medicine and discusses medicine men, Hippocrates, Galen, and Andreas Vesalius; the transition of the doctor from medicine man to scientist is the major theme of this first chapter. Chapter Two focuses on those scientists who made important contributions to the modern physician and surgeon: Rudolf Virchow in pathology, Louis Pasteur in bacteriology, Joseph Lister in antisepsis, and Claude Bernard in physiology. Subsequent chapters discuss medical school, internists, specialists, group practice, hospitals, and some of the economic, social, scientific, and ethical issues facing modern physicians. As with other books in this series, numerous picture essays supplement the narrative. Though an old book, The Physician is a highly readable, informative, and non-technical portrayal of the physician as a scientist. Highly recommended.
