Seller's Description:
First edition. 8vo. 474 pp. Original brown cloth with paper label on spine. A tear to crown of spine. Ex-library with bookplate and several stamps on titlepage and several internal pages. Carey (1793-1879) succeeded his father, Mathew Carey, in the family publishing business, but earned wider recognition as an economist. In this work "he announced himself the foe of the free-trade system...giving definitive statement to his opposition to the Ricardian theory of rent, maintaining that the order of occupation has been from poorer to better soils, and that the progress of associated labor and capital must always bring increasing rather than diminishing returns to effort" (DAB). Cf. DORFMAN, vol. II, pp. 806-807 PALGRAVE I: 226 KRESS C. 7314.
