An action-packed saga of the Viking age, full of dry humour, which follows the adventures of Red Orm as he takes part in some of the great events of Viking history The Long Ships brings alive the fantastic world of the tenth century AD when the Vikings raided the coasts of England and defeated Ethelred the Unready's army at Maldon. In particular it tells the story of a fighting man, Orm, the son of a famous pirate, who while still a boy was shanghaied by the Vikings on the threshold of his home in southern Sweden. He sailed with them in their dragon-prowed ships, marauding against the Franks and Spaniards, was captured by the Moors and spent several years as their galley slave, escaped to Ireland, fought in the Battle of Maldon and journeyed down the unknown rivers of Russia in search of gold. Here is a book packed to the gunwales with pitched battles and bloody feuds, authentic in every historical detail and written with enormous zest and humour.

This book is going on my favorites list. It is full of Viking tales, with much swashbuckling, pillaging, looting, swordplay and the like, but it is also very funny. If you are at all interested in the Vikings, this is the book for you. Wonderful.
