Two parts in one volume; Part One: The Border Captain; Part Two: Portrait Of A President. Marquis James (August 29, 1891, Springfield, Missouri-November 19, 1955) was an American journalist and author, twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his works The Raven: A Biography of Sam Houston and The Life of Andrew Jackson. Following high school he worked at various newspapers across the country, including as a rewrite editor for the New York Tribune in 1916. From 1916 to 1918, Marquis James appeared with short stories and serials in the Chicago Ledger. James served as an Army captain in the First World War, in France from 1917 to 1919. Following his military service, he became National Director of Publicity for the American Legion and worked on the staff at the American Legion Monthly from 1923 to 1932. James also contributed work to The New Yorker, occasionally using the pseudonym "Quid". Other works included A History of the American Legion, Mr. Garner of Texas (1939), and James' autobiography, The Cherokee Strip, A Tale of an Oklahoma Boyhood (1945). In 1941 he began writing the history of businesses, completing Alfred I. DuPont: The Family Rebel (1941); Biography of a Business, 1792-1942: Insurance Company of North America (1942); The Texaco Story, The First Fifty Years: 1902-1952 (1953); The Metropolitan Life: A Study in Business Growth (1947); and Biography of a Bank: The Story of Bank of America (1954), with B. R. James. Throughout his work James attempted to elevate the dry, academic style of historical writing to a literary quality. Although he considered himself more biographer than historian, along with historians Alan Nevins, Carl Becker, and Charles Beard he was part of a movement to wed historical credibility with readability, or what has been called "popular history." In The Life of Andrew Jackson (1937), acclaimed biographer and journalist Marquis James recounts the life of the seventh President of the United States. It brings together in one volume two earlier Jackson biographies written by James, 1934's The Border Captain and 1937's Portrait of a President. The first part of the book is about Jackson's early life: his childhood, time in the military, and tenure as Florida governor and United States senator. The second part of the book focuses on Jackson's first, unsuccessful bid for the presidency, his ascension to the White House, his policies and political maneuverings, and his retirement and later years. The biography opens with Jackson's birth on March 15, 1767, in the Waxhaws regions between North and South Carolina. He is named after his father, who passed away a month before his birth. The elder Andrew Jackson had "strained himself lifting a log" and "took to bed in great pain"; he had died a few days later. While young Andrew never knows his father, he nonetheless grows up to be confident and bright, boasting a commanding voice and powerful presence. Jackson runs against John Quincy Adams in the 1824 election and wins more popular and electoral votes than his opponent. But the margin of votes is not wide enough to count as an electoral majority, and the House of Representatives declares Adams the winner. Deeply stung, Jackson and his supporters form the Democratic Party in an act of rebellion. In 1828, Jackson again runs against Adams and soundly defeats him. But, tragically, Rachel Jackson dies of a heart attack just three weeks after her husband's win and ten weeks before he assumes the Presidency. Jackson chooses their niece, Emily, to be his hostess at the White House. The next portion of the biography centers on President Jackson's various plots and plans, policies and leadership decisions, and the crises he resolved, as well as the crises he created. He vetoes the renewal of the Second Bank of the United States. He is the only President to pay off the entire...

Seller's Description:
Very Good in a Good corner clipped dust jacket. Multiple chips and tears with few larger chips on front and spine of jacket. Owners name on front end page.; 8vo 8"-9" tall.
Beautifully written and very readable. Writing not too long after the events he described, Marquis James was able to make the times come alive. The book gives the reader a feeling for Andrew Jackson as a man as well as an understanding of Jackson's role in contemporary politics.
