The opening chapter (Introduction) explains it best, "Men and women born and bred on the countryside came to live crowded together, earning their bread, no longer as families or groups of neighbors, but as units in the Labour Force of Factories, work grew to be more specialized, new forms of skill were developed, and some old forms lost." In spite of the obvious boom of industry, there was a down side to these advances, as it drastically affected people's lives as well as their livlihood. Additional chapters include Earlier Forms of Industry, Individualism and Laisser-Faire, and The Course of the Economic Age. Good reference for term papers etc.
