This work was intended for officers and senior N.C.O.s. It is concerned almost entirely with the period of military training. The treatment is practical. It was hoped that one effect of this book would be a lessening of the prejudice against the very name 'psychology'. The origin of this work was in early 1942, as a result of a meeting of a small group of psychologists who met with the Director of Selection of Personnel at the War Office. Questions regarding the selection of instructors were understood to be related to the selection of the methods of training. The author took courses in the rifle and the Bren gun, and generally in Battle Drill. As a result, the author submitted a memorandum on methods of instruction which form the abases for chapters V and VI of this work.
