Frontis of Dickens. G in G DJ. Letters of Dickens to wealthy spinster Angela Burdett-Coutts reveal that over 30 years he counseled her about her many. Benefactions and acted in practice as her secretary sieving her numerous requests from indigent writers, fallen women, impoverished families. stranded travelers, etc. But the letters disclose much more. He speaks of novels in progress, confiding of his walks with Fezziwig and Sairey Gamp, debating with her how he should conclude Our Mutual Friend, revealing to her in advance the conclusion of The Old Curiosity Shop. They show how Dickens worked and how he lived with his characters as with actual human beings. The first 20 yrs are light but the last 10 turn somber preluding the bitter rupture with his wife which turned him to a frenzy of work, travel, and continuous readings which resulted in his untimely death. Heavy tanning to top fore-edge, also tanning to DJ edges, DJ edge wear and scrape to front, owner bookplate ft endpaper.
