An absolutely beautiful book with a wonderful story. Each page is filled with a beautiful painting in vivid colors. The brush-lines from the oils are even visible. The colors are energizing. It is illustrated by Georgette Apol. It was originally published in Holland.
The story is basically about a school-aged boy and his family. They live in a fishing village in Holland, and the boy's father is a fisherman. When the father does not return with the other boats one day, the story explains the financial hardship for the mother and the boy's desire to help his mother somehow by taking care of the younger children so his mother can work.
One day, when walking on the beach, he finds a pocket knife and begins to make little carved animals with it. His sibling begin helping him find driftwood to carve. He then tries to sell some. At first, he cannot find anyone who wants to buy his carved animals, but then a gift shop keeper buys them and the boy gives the money to his mother. The boy's father returns, and the boys' wish comes true---to go fishing on his father's boat.
It's a great story that teaches children about financial hardship and how members of the family stick together and help each other out. It teaches children aspects of family economics. The illustrations add much excitement to the story.
