Seller's Description:
Fine. Book First edition. One of 400 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. Introduction and Notes by Carl Schaefer Dentzel. Small folio. Handset type. 34 plates (including two in color) from drawings by Audubon, each with leaf of descriptive text from Audubon's notes. Half black cloth and decorated boards, maroon leather spine label, lettered in gilt. A fine copy. Sketches made by the son of famed ornithologist John James Audubon while on the Gold Rush trail and in California, only 5 of which were previously published. "His sketches and watercolors of San Francisco, Sacramento City, Coloma, mining camps, and miners represent a significant pictorial record of the Gold Rush" (Kurutz). Most of Audubon's drawings were lost in a shipwreck in 1857. The only ones to survive are reproduced here. [Grabhorn: 592; Kurutz: 23; Wagner-Camp: 208, note].
