That Distant Land was an amazing collection of stories. I liked the early ones more than the modern ones, but all were good. The stories followed the passage of a generation, and by the end the community was weakened and everyone was dying off. I suppose the structure couldn't have been as powerful any other way. The short story seems to suit Berry's meandering style much better than novels.
