I was browsing the fiction stacks at the downtown Seattle Public library a few years back and I saw a dark brown book jacket with the off-putting title, "The Dissertation." I thought what kind of author has the balls to put forward such a blase book cover and title. A week before I was at the University of Washington graduate library looking through the senior master's & doctor's thesis; so the bland packaging of graduate dissertations was fresh in my mind. The bland off-putting cover belies the exciting fascinating absorbing writing inside. It is possible that RM Koster is the greatest magical realist writer ever. Koster recounts the life and times of a fictional Central America republic called Tinieblas by highlighting the life-story of one Leon Fuertes. It is at once social history, family saga, picaresque adventure story and brilliant reworking of recent modern history. All of it is rendered in lively cliche-free prose of the highest order. Koster is both a great story teller and an expert writer. There is not a boring sentence in 438 pages. This is a book you will treasure and that you will read again and again. Do I exaggerate? No. See for yourself.
