These diaries present a unique record of the time in which Beatrice Webb and her husband, Sidney, lived. They were at the centre of British intellectual and political life for almost 70 years, and the diaries feature appearances by figures including Churchill, Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolf. Rich in insights and anecdotes about the people and politics of late-Victorian and early modern Britain, the diaries reveal Beatrice as the mistress of salon politics. She devoted herself to the causes that she and Sidney had at heart - including the founding of the London School of Economics, trade unionism, local government, the war against poverty and their books.

Seller's Description:
Very Good Plus. Twelve Vols. All volumes are First Printings. This is the full diary of Beatrice Webb as currently published. Martha Beatrice was born on January 22, 1858 at Standish, near Gloucester. In 1873 she began to record a diary and she continued to make entries until her death at age eighty-five. She was to become one of England's great intellectual and political figures and her diary entries reveal her life and her thought in intriguing detail. The manuscripts are comprised of fifty-seven hand-written exercise books and are housed in the British Library of Political and Economic Science. They are in three forms: the original hand-written exercise books; a typescript, partially typed under Beatrice's supervision and a second typescript by the Library when it found that the first typescript was not complete. Each of these versions differ a bit. Moreover, there are some issues as to the original manuscript as Beatrice made notes or corrections as she prepared some of the entries for publication. She also apparently tore out some pages and destroyed them. In addition, the exercise books also incude wills, letters, newspaper clippings, and other material ( a little poetry, pressed flowers ). Another complication is that Sidney Webb, her husband from 1892, undoubtedly wrote some of the entries, especially on their travels together. Nevertheless, Beatrice was able to reveal herself in the diary manuscripts in an extraordinary depth. Altogether, the material comprises about three million words and the fullness of her life is reflected in the diary's naming more than four thousand persons. Here then are the twelve books reflecting the manuscript material as currently published. The books are listed in order of date of publication: Vol. I: Beatrice Webb, MY APPRENTICESHIP. London: Longmans, Green And Co., 1926. First Edition. Very Good/. Light wear to cloth. Beatrice planned an autobiographical trilogy but this is the only volume that she completed. Here she covers her story to the beginning of 1892, marked by the death of her father on January 1 and her marriage to Sidney Webb six months later. Extensive Appendix material on social, economic and political matters. Vol. II: Barbara Drake and Margaret I. Cole, Editors, OUR PARTNERSHIP ( by Beatrice Webb ). London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1948. First Edition. Very Good/Good. Front hinge is just beginning to weaken. Rubbing, wear and light soil to dust jacket. Beatrice began the work on this book immediately after the publication of the previous book and over the years she did much of the organization and planning of this second book but on April 30, 1943 she died, eleven days after making her last entry in the diary. Sidney then asked Barbara Drake and Margaret Cole to complete the work. This book covers the story to June 3, 1911 just before the Webbs set off on a tour of the world. Drake and Cole contribute a very useful Preface. Cole contributes an excellent Biographical Index to the hundreds of people mentioned in the text. Vol. III: Margaret I. Cole, Editor, BEATRICE WEBB'S DIARIES 1912-1924. London: Longman's, Green And Co, 1952. First Edition. Very Good Plus/Very Good. Light wear to dust jacket. Introduction by Lord Beveridge. Cole picks up the diary here where Beatrice had closed the previous book in 1911 and takes the story to the beginning of 1924. Vol. IV: Margaret I. Cole, Editor, BEATRICE WEBB'S DIARIES 1924-1932. London: Longman's, Green And Co, 1956. First Edition. Very Good Plus/Very Good. Light wear and light soil to dust jacket. Introduction by Cole. This vol. takes the story to 1932 when the Webbs left for the Soviet Union. Cole contributes a fasinating Appendix on the relationship between Beatrice and Joseph Chamberlain as reflected in the diary manuscripts. Vol. V: VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND IN 1898; BEATRICE WEBB'S DIARY WITH ENTRIES BY SIDNEY WEBB. Wellington: Price, Milburn And Company, 1959. First Edition. Very Good/
