Seller's Description:
Very Good in Very Good jacket. Book. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. Signed. Association Copy Black cloth, lettered in gilt. Slight shelf wear, text block edges a bit toned by age. Dust jacket shows mild rubbing to corners and spine extremities, small U-shaped tear along lower spine panel, top corner of front flap clipped (with $6.50 price intact on bottom corner, so not exactly "price-clipped"). l, 442 pp. Presumed 1st, with no additional printings indicated. Poet John Ciardi's copy, with his signature on front flyleaf and his internal notations to several poems, on pp. 134-135, 169-171, extensive notations to "Three Poems of the Atomic Age" (pp. 364-372), 377, 408-414, perhaps a few that we missed, also a note in his hand on Twayne Publishers letterhead that may have been the start of a review: "Dame Edith will reward the most patient reader with a querelous [sic] sort of grace, but he will have to fuss his way through a lot of dusty furniture to reach the presence." Conversely, Ciardi admired Sitwell's concluding couplet to "Bells of Gray Crystal" ("The clouds, gray Chinese geese / Sleek through the sky") even while pondering the stresses in the penultimate line. Downgraded due only to annotations (which hardly detract, given their source), otherwise Near Fine. Note that the Sitwell signature on the front blank preceding the main title is facsimile, despite some sellers' claims, as it is identical to the gilt-stamped signature on the upper front board.
