A reissue of a book that is a masterpiece of clear, compelling prose and sensitive pencil illustrations complemented with superb Magnum photography. It is writing that subtly, then grippingly holds your attention. Talese's writing is "clean", not overdone with adjectives or adverbs to make up for lack of vision. The photography is perflectly placed to accentuate, clarify, and reinforce the writing. The book would not be as good as it is without the photography. Having been at the base of the bridge at its Staten Island anchorage and marveling at its size and sweep, I have only a deeper appreciation for what these men accomplished.
