Below Naburn Lock, in the Lock and Moreby reaches, there is good fishing for chub and roach. The Acaster and Naburn reaches are noted for chub and dace, and there are some good bream holes in the Bishopthorpe and Fulford reaches. About the City of York there is some good roach fishing, and barbel are found close to the Scarborough Bridge. The best chub fishing is at Poppleton, and pike in Benningbrough and Monkton deeps. The holes below Linton Lock are noted for barbel. Above Linton Lock there are both pike and barbel, but the fishing is not very good. It improves above Aldwark and Lower Dunsforth. The Ouse commences at Swale Nab. The coarse fishing is free on sufferance on the right as far as Aldwark Bridge (four miles), and on the left as far as York (eighteen miles). Anglers are expected to keep out of the land when crops are on. Lower Dunsforth is three-quarters of a mile below Swale Nab, and three and a half miles from Boroughbridge Station. Aldwark is three and a half miles below Swale Nab, and three and three-quarter mi es from Alne railway station. There are inns at both places. The fishing on the right from Aldwark to Linton Ferry (three miles) is in the hands of the tenants, from whom permission may be obtained. Linton-upon-Ouse stands on the opposite bank. Here there is an inn, and the nearest railway station is Tollerton Lanes, three and a quarter miles. The fishing on the right from Linton Ferry to the mouth of the Nidd (two and three-quarter miles) is private.
