An Intriguing Tale of A Gentle Creature
I first received a copy of this book around 40 years ago as a gift from a dear friend who has passed on. In the wake of sadness accompanying my divorce I somehow failed to take this book along.
I decided to find a copy of this amazingly intriguing story of one of our makers' creatures with which we share our planet which spends most of its life in the waters of the oceans even though it is a mammal.
The writing style is like having a friend that knows as much as one could at that time, in the 1960's, telling you about the life of a seal and her baby in a real "circle of life' story. One might wonder how could a tale of a year in the life of a seal mother and her baby be anything but a crashing bore. To think so would be a tragic mistake.
If you have any desire to read a very beautiful story told by a gifted writer who is in love with his subject and knows just how to tell you how our lives are intertwined with these gentle creatures then this is a book you must read to understand how I feel about it.
Since I received the book I have already read and re-read it in just this short span of time. It is a 'friend of mine' that I will cherish all my days. I commend it wholeheartedly to you who need to feel wonder at this creation in which we temporarily dwell. If only I could I would put a copy of this book into the hand of every home on the earth - it's that good.
Note: There is another 'companion' book by this same author entitled A Year in the Life of A Whale. It too is a must read and own book.
