Their name may be intended ironically, but that doesn't mean the World Famous Headliners aren't one of the most impressive supergroups to come out of the roots rock realm. At the core of the Nashville-based band are three singer/songwriters who have had their greatest success via other people's recordings of their tunes. Between them, Big Al Anderson, Pat McLaughlin, and Shawn Camp have had their material cut by a jaw-dropping list of country stars over the years. But while Anderson is also beloved for his work as erstwhile singer/guitarist with NRBQ, all three of these heavy-hitters' solo careers have been predominantly under-the-radar affairs. Banding together with the rhythm section of Michael Rhodes and Greg Morrow, these songsmiths have created a mighty pool of talent together. While this is undeniably an Americana outing, it's not the easygoing, back-porch variant -- this is a record that definitively puts the "rock" in roots rock. At times, the Headliners evoke vintage Little Feat, as on the Bo Diddley beatification of "Mamarita." It's easy to imagine tracks like "Give Your Love to Me" as outtakes from classic NRBQ sessions. And when someone (one guesses Big Al) tosses a wonderfully weird six-string monkeywrench into the works on "Party Till the Money's Gone" (a perfect anthem for the post-Recession era), it's obvious that these guys have something more off-kilter on their minds than merely turning out a politely organic-sounding album full of earthy influences for the NPR demographic. Not that the NPR audience -- like all other right-minded folks -- ought not to eat this stuff up with a spoon anyway, mind you.... ~ J. Allen, Rovi
