Happy in conception, ' the opening-drama invited the delightful actor to its aid, unlocking his treasures of intelligence in the most beautiful and varied order, worthy of the poet's praise or painter's tint. In every case generous to the unfortunate j but when deeply affected his sorrow turned to advantage by prostrating the almost irresistible arguments of the enemy; his quivering frame trembled with honest indignation. Devoted entirely to his country, sum. moning to his aid fragments of discovered thought, locked in the recesses of fancy nobly closing each sentence--encountering showers of abuse frequently from-some that should reserve their opinion--at various intervals rapidly pouring contumely on the affrighted creatures of ascendancy--vehemently disclaiming the enemies of the consecrated soil, when criminal-like they stand convicted, muttering in slow expressions anathemas of fearful force but of trifling interest, on one whose clear judgment gloried in lavishing censure of no ordinary kind on the enemies of his adored country.-t It must be admitted that he is an extraordinary man, and deservedly the pride of his native land--defending the wretched victims of ascendancy without reward--indignantly confuting the assembled libellers of justice, and aiding the unprotected people to defeat the designs of the secret enemy by exhibiting them to the gaze of deserved contempt.--Many persons seemed disposed to doubt the welltried...
