Charlton was a professor and a Clark Lecturer at Trinity College, Cambridge during the mid-20th century. Despite the title page saying 7th edition, this is in fact the first edition of the complete works of Francis Osborne. It sold well enough that the collective edition of 1673 was brought to the notice of the House of Lords on 13 March 1676, on the ground that its incidental vindication of a republican form of government in England rendered it a seditious and treasonable publication.
