Of course, she might have telephoned to him, but in that case, from the manner of his entrance, the message must have been to come over and take his guest away--which was scarcely probable. Yet, even if she had made such request, it was of small consequence, beyond possibly putting him in bad odor with his host. He had not the least doubt now of Mrs. Gascoyne's real identity, the snuff-box had settled it, and also had determined him in his purpose.
