This is the first book of the Domesday series by Edward Marston. In this book set in 11th century England, Ralph Delchard, a Norman lord and soldier meets fellow property reassessment commission member Gervase Bret, a Bretton/Saxon chancery clerk (lawyer). The book does a great job including a lot of English history (monarchy, church, military) while solving the murder mystery. The setting seems to be an authentic (as far as I can tell) English village of that time. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the 8 book series.
