This is one of those books written on many levels that will appeal to kids and adults alike. While I wouldn't recommend it for three-year-olds, for about age five and above it is a great read-to over several bedtimes, and I thoroughly enjoyed it myself (I'm a grandma). For youngsters it is just a good story about an ugly boy who grows up with a witch and talking animals, but adults can see the deeper layers that Michael Gruber has given it. And it is fun to recognize all the traditional fairy tales he has woven into the story. Well-written and highly recommended.
