The Events at Valley Forge Related in Diary Form
The Winter of Red Snow is one of many books in the Dear America Series. Written in a diary format, these books are designed for readers in the upper elementary grades through middle school. Abigail Stewart (a girl residing in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania) relates to the reader her thoughts and feelings about the people and events at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778. George and Martha Washington, Lafayette, Baron von Steuben, Charles Lee, Alexander Hamilton, and Benedict Arnold all make appearances. We learn about the suffering of the soldiers and the grim conditions faced by the Continental Army. Historical background is provided at the end of the book as well as several illustrations and maps. Though a bit monotonous at times, The Winter of Red Snow is a good book on one of the dark yet triumphant episodes in the American Revolution.
