Seller's Description:
Very Good in Very Good jacket. Size: 10x10x0; Using a unique seasonal approach to grape growing, wine making, and drinking, Buller writes of visits with Bordeaux wine principals and provides historical background to round out the conversational interview/commentaries. While tending to idealize his topic by emphasizing the mystical, romantic qualities of wine, Buller offers some useful information on such topics as blending and labeling. On the other hand, photographer Guillard does not neglect the less glamorous side of this life...the hard field and cellar work, the inhumane forced feeding of the pate foie gras geese, the cold winters. The high-quality photos reveal the practical side of wine production, integrated with scenes of beautiful chateaux and glorious countryside. Famous chef Paul Bocuse contributed the preface and a short interview.

I know the books by Michael Buller very well. I'm his widow, Jennifer. He penned these long before we were wed. In fact he was married to someone else before he became a widower. Regardless, my Michael's writing style may not be of worldwide critical acclaim. But he wrote from the heart, of the people he knew & strangers he interviewed that soon called him a friend and ambassador of their life and craft. He always wanted to represent them properly & do them proud. When he listened to them, or anyone, he gave you his undivided attention. Which is why many of the great chefs, winemakers & artisans of France respected 'Michel' and he was so endeared to them. An Englishman whom graduated from the prestigious HARROW School & in his mid 20s ventured on a whim to France--not knowing ANY French at all. It was sink or swim. That was Michael. In less than 3 yrs he became fluent--& not through any classes or books. Total immersion. He was adventurous, faced every challenge w/ a smile, tenacity & earnestly worked his way through the society ranks as a radio programme producer, having well heeled friends that introduced him to their connections because he was honest & trustworthy & genuine.. and he cared. I'm fortunate to have had such a dynamic person in my life. We were not blessed w/ time [I was his PA before he proposed 3 times & I later said yes on a biz trip... in Paris!], but we were graced with quality of our time together, unconditional love and such energy & contentment- that level above happiness. And I was elated to have met many of his friends/ colleagues whom I'm in touch w/ still. Michael had an enviable rolodex of just friends: Paul Bocuse, Andre Soltner, Lea Linster, the late Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Academy award winner Ronald Harwood, Roger Verge, the late Vivien Leigh- Charles Chaplin, Jacques Esterel & Josephine Baker, etc. My eyes would boggle everytime! LOL.
But a few yrs after I lost Michael to prostate cancer, only in my mid 30s, I could no longer afford our spacious UWS NYC rental [or anything else in NY]. I had to vacate. I put everything we both had, into storage in the Bronx. I didn't know where I wld. end up, but our belongings, incl. his ashes and all his books & my wedding band [i wear his] had a roof. Until I ran out of money. I lost EVERYTHING in storage to the auction & the dumpsters. It nearly killed me & I felt sad & ashamed. No ashes, not even a single book or love letter of his in my ownership. It crushed me & I still live w/ that pain.
But its many yrs L8R & thanks to Alibris, other shop owners & a bookstore owner friend in NYC have helped me reunite w/ my hubby's books I so treasure [Bordeaux; Beaujolais & his other book FRENCH CHEFS COOKING]. So thank you from my heart.. and for Michael too. I've lost the original final edit of what was to be his final book in his wine series. But who knows. Perhaps someday the loose draft pages of his manuscript will resurface. I can only pray-- & look. Toujours, Jennifer I. Cotton-Buller
