While this has caused much extra labor and inconvenience, it has at the same time proved an excellent opportunity for the making of some desirable improvements. A number of new owers have been added, the nomenclature has been brought up to date, and, for the sake of those who wish to study plants in a somewhat more scientific manner and to become acquainted with their botanical relationships, an artificial key has been added, together with scientific and popular descriptions of all the plant families represented in this work. The Linnaean key, which groups plants by the number of their stamens, has been used because it is simple and easily understood and traces plants to their genera without a separate key for each of the large plant families.
