Set in a fishing village on Cape Cod before we were a country, Lyddie's husband dies in a whaling accident. She discovers she has almost no rights. But she's a gutsy woman who fights for the little that is hers. Fascinating view of women's history, the overly stringent religious patriarchy, women's lack of rights...we should be grateful!

good historical fiction
Well written and enjoyable historical fiction about early America. All of the members of my small book group liked it, and it afforded good discussion too!

Women and the law
I really enjoyed this novel of a woman who suddenly becomes a widow and her fight for independence from the men who would wish to control her. These included her son in law, an Indian neighbor and a lawyer. Each one, in his own way, tries to either control or protect and the widow is not having any of that. Well written with a real feel for colonial times in New England.
