I haven't finished this book yet, but I am attached to the main character, Ellen Montgomery, despite her ability to produce copious tears at every turn of a page. She's a little girl who has lost her mother (one way or another). As Ellen encounters new people and situations, she begins to mature and learn to cope with her sorrows. A lot of this coping involves Christian exercises of the mind. If you can put up with that, it's a compelling novel, full of 19th-century details. It was a bestseller for nearly 100 years. It probably contributed greatly to the "cult of domesticity." I am simply enjoying it.
