If Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could read Edward B. Hanna's novel, he'd be just as floored by it as I was.
Hanna takes no time at all to dip the reader into the streets of Whitechapel, London in 1888 upon the discovery of Dr. Watson's notes on the most disturbing case of his past.
Whilst London is regarded as one of the most thriving of cities in the world, the area of Whitechapel within London is the area that the world would rather forget it all than relive the horrors that occurred there.
Hanna has done his research to say the least. To incorporate two legends into one passable novel is difficult as it is, but to be able to please the most critical and well-versed persons in the subjects of Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper is to guarantee a masterpiece.
I don't toss the word 'masterpiece' around that often, but I have found that word best fits this novel.
Sherlock Holmes and his compatriot Dr. Watson tackle the most stirring and definitive case of their time: The Whitechapel Murders. Hanna has resurrected Doyle's Holmes and Watson with perfection. Yet, he adds a new dimension to Holmes and Watson. Holmes has had hundreds of cases in his lifetime and none of them have ended with such a result as the case against Jack the Ripper.
This book does much more than any book before it on the subject of Ripper. It doesn't just give an amazingly accurate portrayal of the events...it makes you feel like you're under the orb of light from a streetlamp on the streets of Whitechapel in 1888.
In this respect, the book does better than any novel, video game, or motion picture ever could to bring a modern day person into the times and scenes of Jack the Ripper's murders.
This book promises to be a buffet for enthusiasts and the curious minds out there who want to experience Holmes' deduction or the infamous crime scenes of Jack the Ripper.
Hanna has arranged the cab for us to travel back to 1888's London, all one has to do is hop in and enjoy the ride. There will be elements of heart-pounding suspense, comic relief, and sheer fascination along the way, but I can promise that the ending although inconclusive is more satisfying than any theory could have brought to light behind the murders.
