"The Whalers" is one of 22 volumes in The Seafarers book series published by Time-Life books in the late 1970s/early 1980s. This book focuses on the New England whaling industry in the mid-1800s. The descriptions of life at sea and the dangers associated with hunting whales in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans make one appreciate modern life. The Civil War and the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania in 1859 led to the end of the great era of whaling. This is the first book I have read in this series and I am looking forward to reading other volumes. This is a great book with numerous illustrations.
