Second State with page 9 unnumbered. Ref: Howes R-208. In 1900, Harper's dropped Remington as their star artist to save costs. To compensate, Remington wrote and illustrated a full-length novel, The Way of an Indian. Though intended for serialization by a Hearst publication, it wasn't published until five years later in Cosmopolitan. The protagonist, Fire Eater, a Cheyenne, reflects Remington's and his era's typical view of Native Americans.
