This is a well-written, even- handed treatment of the two most important water developments in the history of Alta California. It begins with the Owens Valley War. That was (is) the theft of most of the water from the southeastern Sierra Nevada by Los Angeles developers and the LA Department of Water & Power. This destroyed Owens Lake and nearly destroyed Mono Lake in order to make possible the suburban sprawl and environmental disaster of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. The other water development is about the numerous dams along the Rio Colorado. This is a somewhat more benign environmental disaster which created, in the short term, productive farm land in the Salton Sink (Imperial Valley). However, it has also destroyed the natural cycles of the river and seriously damaged the plant and animal species that once lived here. it also destroyed Glen Canyon and created the Salton Sea, a serious environmental concern. While there are other works on the Owens Valley War, Nadeau's treatment of the history of the Rio Colorado stands nearly alone.
