They feel confident their work will receive precisely the measure of approbation or censure to which it is entitled. Their main object has been, by telling their story in a simple, unambitious style, to awaken curiosity, and attract the attention of readers to more profound works of a similar nature. If they shall be successful thus far, they will have attained all they aim at. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ... Seller's Description:
Near Fine. First edition (1845 on copyright page, 1846 on title page). Small quarto in brick colored blindstamped ribbed cloth, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. (1) 295 (2). Small booksellers ticket first rear blank. Important early American temperance work that traces efforts to battle intemperance from Biblical days, with a section on the practices of making and the composition of wines in the pre-Christian era; among other chapters in the book are "Temperance Among The Heathens", "The Discovery of Alcohol", "Intemperance in Connexion with The Church", "Efforts to Surpress Intemperance from the Apostles to 1800" and, in the final section, detailed look at Temperance Societies in America between 1833 and the publication of this book. A tight, bright example, spine gilt bright, minor wear at the extremities; scattered light foxing to the text, more so to the first 30 or so leaves. A very nice example indeed of this scarce temperance title.
