Daniel Carroll Toomey is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the author or co-author of a dozen books including The Civil War in Maryland and Baltimore During the Civil War. He has lectured for a number of historical organizations including the Smithsonian Institution and Johns Hopkins University. He was Project Historian for the Maryland Memorial erected at Gettysburg in 1994 and wrote the inscription for that monument. Dan has won numerous awards including the Gettysburg National Battlefield Award in 1985 and was the 2001 recipient of the Peterkin Award given by the National Park Service at Fort McHenry. He was the Guest Curator at the B&O Railroad Museum and designed "The War Came by Train" exhibit-the largest Civil War railroad exhibit ever presented." Beginning with the B & O's reaction to John Brown's Raid in 1859 and ending with the demobilization of the Union Army in 1865, the overall strategy and political aims of the time period are blended with the battles and daily operational challenges of a Civil War Railroad. The scope of this work, beginning with John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859 and ending with Garrett's immediate post-war aims, allows the reader to see how each event effected the operation of the railroad and in turn the Union war effort. The administrative accomplishments of President Garrett and his right hand man, Master of Transportation William Prescott Smith, show brightly through each crisis.
