I have scarcely cried as hard in my entire life as I did during the last chapter of this book. Through telling the story of a family through three generations, Enchi shows the reader the effects of social and political change during the Meiji Period in Japan. She makes it extremely real, and brings ideas abstract to the Western reader concrete.
