The present copy is inscribed in ink on the title page to Hell's friend & neighbor, the late popet and art critic Peter Schjeldahl thus: "feb 17 for Peter without whom I'd really be in Hell Love Richard". The oblique reference will be understandable to anyone who neither either man. The book was written in a girlfriend's apartment "overlooking the graveyard at St. Mark's Church."
