In this "classic novel of the Old West" Norman A. Fox presents a novel the kind of which was written during the 1930's and 1940's--this one was originally published by Dodd, Mead in 1946--so the style is flamboyant and outrageous, and some of the characters are that way as well. It is almost like watching a Gene Autry or Roy Rogers western made during that time period, as Chip Halliday's "sidekick" Singin' Sam McAllister does just that through most of the book--sing. But beyond that Halliday is an escapee from jail and being trailed by a prison guard and a lynch mod as Halliday tries to reach an outlaw sancturary known as Forlorn Valley. What the reader doesn't learn until much later is, Halliday is on a secret mission that will either make him a hero or a dead man. A pretty good book.
