Excerpt from The University of Chicago: An Official Guide This guidebook, containing some mention of all the existing buildings of the University of Chicago, is designed to emphasize especially those structures which can be visited by persons who can give only a short period to the study of the institution. In addition to such practical information as has been sought by many who have already journeyed to the quadrangles, it seeks to be of service especially to new students by giving some notion of the kind of people who contributed to the making of the University - not only those who gave funds for buildings and endowments, but those who, as trustees and members of the Faculties, have devoted themselves loyally to its advancement. Not all, of course, can be even mentioned, for the members of the Faculties alone number over four hundred and fifty. When, however, a particular room or building is associated with a particular person that relationship is noted in the belief that visitors will be glad to regard the institution not only as an architectural museum, but as a habitat of scholars who are contributing to the increase of knowledge and the enrichment of human life. Most of the photographs were made by Associate Professor W. J. G. Land and the writer. In compiling the text free use has been made of already existing descriptions in the University Record and the Annual Register. Because the development of the University is so rapid, errors and omissions are doubtless manifold. Corrections and suggestions will be gratefully received.
