Haiti is probably one of the least understood and most maligned nations in the Western hemisphere. It has been subjected to wars, blockades, occupations, deforestation, dictatorships and demands for countless reparations. Yet it's people never quit. Through hurricanes and earthquakes somehow they maintain their dignity.
Most of us are only familiar with the country as a victim of all of these disasters. The common belief is that Haiti has either somehow deserved all of it or is just a repository of bad luck. The author's carefully researched analysis of one period, the American occupation of it from 1915-1934, most of it from government documents, shows a totally different version of events. He presents the real reasons for the occupation and its disasterous consequences. Life in Haiti is presented from the American and Haitian points of view. This is probably the only book of it's kind. A must read.
