Sacramento-born trumpeter and bandleader Dick Jurgens led a sweet swing band that made its first records in 1934. By 1937-1939, when the material on Hindsight's first volume of The Uncollected Dick Jurgens & His Orchestra was recorded, Jurgens was leading a successful orchestra off of which Glenn Miller would periodically feed for fresh material. Vocals, and most of the songs had vocals, were occasionally by pianist Ronnie Kemper but usually by guitarist Eddy Howard, who left Jurgens in 1940 and formed his own band in 1941. This is a very accurate survey of the Dick Jurgens Orchestra. The proportions are correct in that most of the songs are romantic ballads or ditties (best of all perhaps being Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood"), with the lighthearted "There's a New Picture in My Picture Frame" tossed in for the sake of perkiness along with "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down," a melody fated to be associated with Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes animated films. Best of all are two authentic instrumental jazz performances; Harold Mooney's "Swamp Fire" and Jelly Roll Morton's "King Porter Stomp" are examples of the Dick Jurgens Orchestra in high gear, sounding like a real jazz big band or, more accurately, a sweet dance band that could swing like the dickens when the occasion called for it. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
