A coming of age story that focuses on the changes of both a young man and young woman. The young man, Richard, is rich, educated, kind, and generous but he is restless and aimless in life. He has a lot of money and is soon to inherit millions but he drifts through life, a lonely man with very little ambition. In a chance encounter he sees Roberta Gray, the eldest daughter of local family. He is at first captured by her beauty. She is practical, independent, and assertive. Richard seeks to meet her formally and takes a job with her uncle as his secretary. He eventually meets Roberta but finds that she is unipressed with his money and has already judged him to be unworthy of her. Richard seeks to get to know her but while she keeps him at arm's length he begins to see that his aimless ways are unproductive and as he learns how to work he awakens into a new man. Roberta slowly sees that she has misjudged him and repents of her pride.
