Excerpt from The Traveller's Directory Through the United States: Containing, a Description of All the Principal Roads Through the United States, With Copious Remarks on the Rivers, and Other Objects The compiler of this work having systematically engaged in the promulgation of geographical knowledge by the publica tion of maps; has also been induced to bend his attention to the necessary descriptions, and the result, hitherto, has been stamp ed by public approbation.. That branch of topography which relates to roads and distances, from its great importance, claimed early attention; but such is the extent of the country, and the difficulty of Obtaining accurate information on every point, that, although materials have been collecting for several years, it was only of late that they were judged of sufiicient importance to be laid before the public. From the great labour that has been bestowed upon the sub ject, the publisher hopes that it will be found to merit public approbation; but it is presented with diffidence, from a convic tion, that the errors in a first edition of a work of this nature must be numerous. He is, however, conscious that he has done it every justice in his power, and is convinced that the risk he runs of incurring the charge of inaccuracy, bears 110 proportion to the good that will arise from an attempt to promulgate know ledge of so great importance to the community.
