Without a doubt, one of the finest adventure writers is Thor Heyerdahl. Many do not agree with his ideas or methods, but he was a one-of-a-kind guy who would test his own theories and write great books about them. He obviously keeps a good journal. His knowledge of marine life and anthropology make his descriptions first class. I think that the stories of the sharks following the boat and the flying fish that would end up on board and then became a meal are great. It sounds fantastic, voyaging down the Tigris, emulating Noah and his ark. The pollution in the gulf sounds disgusting. His experiences in Oman reveal a little about a somewhat closed culture. The marsh Arabs? own communities are fascinating through Heyerdahl?s eyes. These tribes also were studied in Gavin Maxwell books. Here, their traditions are seen to be slipping away to advancements, such as outboard motors. Being on board Tigris is much of the adventure, but also speaking with the tribal elders and sorting through traditions and practices that are only passed on through the spoken word plays a large role in this (and other) outings. Perhaps the most striking is the situation in the horn of Africa. The political and religious conflicts that stand in the way of the crew toward the end remain in place to this day. Somalia is the prime example and fills the reader with frustration. The book includes many excellent photographs, one of which (the last one) should be poster sized. This is a magnificent adventure well written by the man who made it happen.
