The war, the rise of Hitler, Mussolini's invasion of Abyssinia, the drama and tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. A period which began with attempts to ban battleships and submarines was to see the building of great defences like the Maginot Line and the Siegfried Line and the mass bombing of Guernica. The decade was not without its royal crises - the death of George V and the drama of the abdication of Edward VIII was followed by the splendour of the coronation of George VI. Hunger marches from Jarrow were followed by clashes between the supporters and foes of Sir Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists. The "Queen Mary" was launched, Noel Coward dominated the stage, Hollywood reached its zenith and TV made its tentative start at London's Alexandra Palace.
