It's a case of wrong time, wrong place. A woman is shot dead on the L-platform in Southport; minutes later another commuter is taken out by a sniper on the L-train on the corner of Lake and Wabash. And Michael Kelly, cynical Chicago cop turned private investigator, just happens to be on the scene when all hell breaks loose. Kelly is hired under the table by Mayor Wilson to find the killer before he can attack again. His involvement is strictly unofficial as the FBI are already muscling in, headed by a pushy female agent, Katherine Lawson. He teams up with tough-talking cop Rodriguez and a keen cyber-hacker called Hubert to piece together the hard evidence and random hunches. The situation isn't helped by the fact that the killer keeps calling Kelly on his cell Everything seems to lead back to an L-train accident that happened back in 1980. As Kelly gets nearer to the truth, his instincts lead him to an old retired cop, a shady train company, the city's cynical cardinal and an abandoned highrise project in Southport, where the echoing warren of gang tunnels could be hiding anything. And to make things worse, his federal judge girlfriend Rachel is about to get involved. Michael Harvey's third Michael Kelly novel is stylish, testosterone-filled crime thriller that packs a punch and confirms his place in the ranks of Chandler and Grisham.

first book i've read of Harvey's. Have ordered and received first two, which may lead into The Third Rail. Maybe similar in nature to Lehane's writing. Enjoyed it a lot. Never get to read much about Chicago.
